Habitat's Mission Statement
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Habitat's Philosophy
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian organization that helps low-income families build their own homes. The philosophy of Habitat is that the economically disadvantaged need capital, not charity, and co-workers, not caseworkers, in order to obtain a decent house in a decent community. Habitat welcomes people of all faiths to work with us in our affordable housing ministry.
In 1968, Millard Fuller, businessman and lawyer from Alabama, and Dr. Clarence Jordan, founder of Koinonia Farms in Americus, Georgia, began work to eliminate substandard housing in Sumter County, Georgia. Determined not to act as a money lender and charge interest when lending to the poor, Koinonia Farms began building and selling houses to low-income families at no profit, no interest in 1968.
In 1973, Millard and Linda Fuller carried the Koinonia Farms concept to Zaire, Africa, and launched a building program for more than 160 houses. When they returned to the United States in 1976, the Fullers settled in Americus, Georgia, and created Habitat for Humanity in order to expand their work.
Habitat is now headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and has more than 1,687 affiliates across the United States. Habitat also operates in 100 countries around the world.
